Central Ohio Shows Off Its Dogs on August 24th
WESTERVILLE, OH- Humans already know what dogs will soon find out: There are plenty of good things to see and smell in Uptown Westerville, especially during Mount Carmel St. Ann’s 4th Friday Dog Days of Summer.
The event on August 24, 2018 from 6-9pm will not only feature 130 street vendors and food trucks geared toward two-legged folks, but an extra section of vendors, on W. College Ave., to appeal to our four-legged friends.
“Westerville and all of Central Ohio is an area that is extremely dog-friendly,” said Jeff Hartnell, Executive Director of the Westerville Visitors & Convention Bureau. “This is a great opportunity for families to come out with their dogs and have some fun exploring Uptown.”
Owners can turn their lap dog into a fox hound as they explore all corners of Uptown Westerville during the “Dog Days Fox Hunt to Benefit Furry Friends.” From 6-8pm, human/canine teams can get a Fox Hunt Flyer for $10 (cash preferred) at Captivating Canines, 12 E. Main St., and take it to various locations throughout Uptown to collect fox stickers. Once all the foxes are found, they will show the completed flyer at Captivating Canines and enter a drawing for three prize baskets. The drawing will take place at 8:15pm at Captivating Canines and the winners will be announced at both music stages at 8:30pm. The first 50 teams to register will receive a goody bag.
Pets can get their photos taken at Captivating Canines, which will also be the location of a book signing by Gizmo, the canine author of “Gizmo’s Guide to Dog Tricks”.
Dogs will be able to bob for treats, bowl for treats, learn a trick and more during the Doggie Carnival in the parking lot of Union Savings Bank, 44 S. State St. Each activity will be $1 with the funds raised going to the rescue groups that supply the most volunteers that night. Also look for the Shirk Orthodontics Kids Corner.
Next to the WVCB office at 20 W. Main St. dogs will have the chance to prove to their people they qualify as an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen. Testing will be conducted by certified dog trainers for $20 and a practice test will be given for $10. Dogs must be able to accept a friendly stranger, sit politely for petting, walk on a loose lead, obey commands and other items. For more information on requirement for the test, visit http://www.akc.org/dog-owners/training/canine-good-citizen/training-testing/. Proceeds will be used to train rescue dogs to make them more adoptable.
The “pawprint” of the event will be expanded with special features happening north at Uptown Eye Care at 114 N. State St. and as far south as ERA Real Solutions Realty, 168 S. State St. There will be adoptable dogs, face painting, refreshments and other fun at both locations.
The Westerville Public Library, 126 S. State St., invites dogs for a soapy bath on its front lawn during the evening. Towels, soap, water, tubs and treats will be provided. Bath time will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.
The music and entertainment for the evening will be enough to make anyone prick up their ears. On the Rudler Team Keller Williams Music Stage Avalon Nine will be cranking out great rock and roll tunes. During their breaks, the Taoist Tai Chi Society and The Academy Irish Dance will demonstrate their talents. On W. Main St., Leap of Faith Dance Company will perform at 6:15 and 7:15pm. On E. College Ave., Seven Dance Company will practice their moves at 7:30 and 8pm, with presentations by Essentrics body awareness coach Jill Roth at 7pm and 8:30.
The Arts Council of Westerville will offer hands-on art activities for children and Westerville Art League members will offer original artwork, prints photography, cards, fused and stained glass and jewelry as part of Arts Alley located near Hanby School, 56 S. State St.
The Westerville Bicycle Club encourages attendees to ride their bikes to 4th Friday and will keep bikes secure during the event in its free Bike Corral next to Jimmy V’s, 1 S. State St.
Mix 107.9 will be on W. Main St. close to the drop-off point for the AAA Ohio Auto Club 4th Friday Shuttle at 20 W. Main St. Attendees can park at The Point at Otterbein University, 60 Collegeview Ave. and ride the free shuttle Uptown to enjoy the festivities. The shuttle will run every 15 minutes until 9p.m.
