Uptown Celebrates Fun on a Global Scale
What’s the definition of diversity? Just look at the Westerville City School District where 46 native languages are spoken by 1,380 students who hail from 57 countries.
The Westerville Visitors & Convention Bureau will highlight customs, cultures and cuisine from around the planet during Mount Carmel St. Ann’s 4th Friday: World Bazaar on July 27, 2018 from 6-9pm in Historic Uptown Westerville.
From food to entertainment, the typical 4th Friday fun will take on a global flavor. On the Meza Wine Shop Music Stage, Tim O’Connor will play favorites from the British Isles from 6-9pm. While he takes a break at 7pm, World Irish Dance Champions from The Academy Irish Dance will perform in front of Church of the Messiah.
The Academy Co-owner Edward Searle said the studio is proud of its Central Ohio students who participated in the 2018 World Championships in Ireland. Seeing these Champions in action is a spectacle not to be missed.
The Generations Performing Arts Center will feature its dancers from 6-7:30pm on W. College Ave. Immediately following belly dancers from Habeeba’s Dance of the Arts will bring centuries-old moves of the Middle East to Uptown and will even ask for audience participation along the way.
Meanwhile further south at the Westerville Public Library, 126 S. State St., award-winning African drum and dance choreographer Queen Najla will lead a family drum circle. This activity will include interactive activities for all activities like call and response and will be moved indoors to the Combined Meeting Rooms in case of inclement weather.
Throughout the evening, Imagine Productions will be promoting their upcoming show, “Rock of Ages,” the 1980’s Hollywood fairy tale that pits wanna’ be rock and rollers against German developers who want to turn the Sunset Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. East College Ave. will be filled with 80’s hair-band music featured in the show that will open August 2nd at the Northland Performing Arts Center.
Ethnic cuisine will be plentiful in, from both Uptown restaurants and a variety of food trucks and carts. Look for Greek and Italian from Koble, Far East favorites from the Thai Grille and Rollies and for the first time, you’ll be able to get a preview of Uptown’s newest restaurant Phatt Taco. Food trucks will include Zaki Grill (Middle Eastern), Schmidt’s (German), Cupzilla (Korean BBQ) and Niko’s Street Eats (Greek).
As in April, May and June, State St. (State Route 3) will close at 5:30p.m. and will be closed until 9:15p.m. for the event. For additional details about street closures, see below.
Attendees will not only enjoy extended hours in the Uptown shops and restaurants, but street vendors and food trucks along State St. as well as the side streets featuring all manner of products and services.
Parents looking for the bounce houses will find them near Union Savings Bank, 44 S. State St. The Shirck Orthodontics Kids Corner will operate from 6-9p.m.
Mix 107.9 will be on W. Main St. close to the drop-off point for the AAA Ohio Auto Club 4th Friday Shuttle at 20 W. Main St. Attendees can park at The Point at Otterbein University, 60 Collegeview Ave. and ride the free shuttle Uptown to enjoy the festivities. The shuttle will run every 15 minutes until 9p.m.
For cyclists, the Westerville Bicycle Club will sponsor a free Bike Corral. This year, it will be next to Jimmy V’s, 1 S. State St. and will be accessible from the City Hall parking lot or State St. They will do short maintenance checks and keep bikes secure while their owners enjoy the event.
