Go ahead. Look up “Awesome” in the dictionary, online or otherwise. What do you find? Words like “terrific“, “extraordinary“, “inspiring wonder“, “sublime“, which is to say, elevated quality. All of these words describe Westerville and its people.

The word “Awesome” also has another definition, “showing reverence, admiration or fear“. As recent events have shown, our community does that too. #WestervilleStrong certainly described the way the entire area rallied around two grieving families and our highly valued first responders.

But even before the events of 2-10-18 reminded us that evil can happen here, there was awesomeness everywhere. There were parks to visit, family events to enjoy, programs to sign up for, parades to watch, frozen custard flavors to try, museums to explore, art to create and local businesses to support.

Even now, as the grief is still raw and the blue ribbons still blow on their poles, those things are still there for residents and visitors. Firefighters and paramedics are still answering your calls and police officers are still protecting you. 9-1-1 dispatchers are still there when you need them. All the other city workers are doing their jobs and so are you. All the things that make Westerville awesome are still here and we can’t forget it.

That’s where you can help us. When you see something that you think makes Westerville awesome, use the hashtag #WestervilleAwesome. For people who want to know more about Westerville, they will be able to see all the great things that happen here. For those of us who live here, when the memories are too much and the tears start to fall, all we have to do is type in that hashtag and remind ourselves why we made it through.
