The year begins with the arts, where storytelling takes on a powerful and expressive form. On April 26, the Westerville Symphony’s Masterworks III performance sets the tone for the year with a program that is equal parts celebration, reflection, and revelation.

At the center is the world premiere of Til All Success Be Nobleness by Jennifer Merkowitz, Professor of Music and Head of Theory & Composition at Otterbein University. Commissioned specifically for America’s 250th and inspired by Westerville’s temperance history, the piece reflects both the city’s past and its ongoing creative spirit. More than a performance, it continues Otterbein’s legacy of women shaping the arts—highlighting the role of women as composers, educators, and creative leaders whose work continues to influence the cultural landscape today.

Made possible through a partnership with the Westerville History Museum, the Westerville Historical Society, and the Johnstone Fund for New Music, this performance ensures that Westerville’s voice is part of the national story. Paired with works like Charles Ives’ Variations on America and George Gershwin’s Catfish Row, the program traces the arc of the American experience—its creativity, complexity, and ever-evolving identity.

Stories on the Table

As spring unfolds, the Taste of Westerville on May 7, hosted by the Westerville Area Chamber of Commerce, brings the community together through local flavor and connection. Participants are invited to customize their signature dishes as a tribute to their founding roots or personal stories, adding a meaningful layer that reflects the spirit of America250.

While rooted in the present, events like this echo a long-standing tradition of gathering, sharing, and storytelling through food—highlighting the people, cultures, and experiences that continue to shape Westerville today.

Moments of Reflection

That sense of reflection deepens over Memorial Day weekend at the Field of Heroes, organized by the Westerville Sunrise Rotary Club. In 2026, the theme, “We the People,” recognizes the nation’s 250th by commemorating defining moments in American history—from the American Revolution to the Civil War, the Women’s Suffrage Movement, the Great Depression, World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, and September 11, 2001.

Thousands of flags create a powerful tribute, while the Revolutionary War Veterans Cemetery Walk at Pioneer Cemetery offers a meaningful connection to the earliest chapters of the nation’s story.

A Citywide Moment

On June 26, Uptown Westerville’s Fourth Friday Festival, hosted by Uptown Westerville Inc., becomes a centerpiece of the city’s America250 programming. This America250-themed evening brings the community together through local vendors, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities—creating a vibrant setting rooted in both tradition and civic pride.

At the heart of the evening, the America250 Westerville Mural Project officially launches with a public activation from 6–9 PM on the lawn of Hanby Elementary. While the murals will already be installed across the city, this event marks the moment the community is invited to engage with the project in a meaningful way.

Attendees can connect with local civic and community organizations, including the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Columbus, Birdie Books, WeRISE Westerville, and the Westerville Public Library. The event also features family-friendly activities and lawn games, opportunities to learn about each mural and its story, and information on how to participate in the digital mural trail. Visitors can also pick up the official America250 Westerville Guide, which offers a comprehensive overview of the mural project and highlights how to explore it across the city.

Select sponsors will be on-site, including Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, offering complimentary frozen yogurt cups while supplies last—adding a fun and welcoming element to the evening. Together, the festival and kickoff event create a shared moment of connection, marking the official start of a citywide canvas centered on story, place, and community.

Tradition Continues

That momentum carries into July with two signature events rooted in tradition and community. Westerville’s Fourth of July celebration, hosted by the Rotary Club of Westerville, blends patriotism and shared tradition, bringing people together year after year in recognition of the nation’s history.

Just days later, the Westerville Area Chamber Music & Arts Festival (July 11–12) continues a legacy that began more than a century ago. In the 1870s, farmers from surrounding townships gathered in Westerville for a multi-day fair filled with exhibits, entertainment, and horse racing—an event that became a cornerstone of community life.

That tradition evolved through the Fall Festival of the mid-20th century and lives on today through the Music & Arts Festival. Now in its 52nd year, the festival at Heritage Park embraces the America250 theme through art, performance, and storytelling. From historical portrayals like “The Day We Began” by Curtain Players to themed crafts, nostalgic Americana music, and visual elements reflecting red, white, and blue, the festival brings history forward in creative and engaging ways.

Looking Deeper

Throughout the year, the Westerville Historical Society offers programs, walking tours, and lectures that provide deeper insight into the people, places, and events that have shaped the community. Topics range from the Underground Railroad and local theaters to early pioneers and Westerville’s evolving landscape.

Opening May 1, The interactive exhibit Public Opinion: Beyond the Headlines in Westerville, on view at the Westerville History Museum, complements these efforts by inviting visitors to step into the role of an investigative journalist—examining multiple perspectives and uncovering how public discourse has shaped the city over time.
